A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese.
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, or sex differences. Athletes may have a high BMI despite being healthy.
A BMI outside 18.5–24.9 is a signal worth discussing with a doctor — not a diagnosis. Your physician will consider additional factors: waist circumference (risk increases above 35" for women, 40" for men), body composition, blood pressure, blood glucose, and family history. Small sustainable changes (5–10% weight loss) produce meaningful health improvements regardless of whether you reach a "healthy" BMI.
