Step 1: Calculate quality points for each course

The semester GPA is 3.40. Notice that the C in the 1-credit elective barely moved the GPA — because it only carried 1 credit. The same C in the 4-credit chemistry course would have pulled the GPA down substantially more.

Weighted vs. unweighted GPA

Unweighted GPA

Uses the standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. An A in a regular class and an A in an AP class both count as 4.0. Most colleges recalculate to unweighted GPA for fair comparison across applicants from different schools.

Weighted GPA

Adds bonus points for harder courses, common in US high schools. Typical weighting:
