Step-by-step example

A group of four at a restaurant has a $120 pre-tax meal. State sales tax is 8%. They want to tip 20% on the pre-tax amount and split evenly.

Calculate the components:

Tax: $120 × 0.08 = $9.60 Tip: $120 × 0.20 = $24.00 Total: $120 + $9.60 + $24.00 = $153.60 Per person: $153.60 ÷ 4 = $38.40

Compare to tipping on the post-tax total:

Post-tax base: $129.60 Tip at 20%: $129.60 × 0.20 = $25.92 Total: $129.60 + $25.92 = $155.52 Per person: $155.52 ÷ 4 = $38.88

Tipping on post-tax in this example costs an extra $1.92 — about $0.48 per person. Over a year of regular dining, that adds up, which is why most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal as both fairer and consistent.

What percentage to tip

Restaurants (sit-down service)

Food delivery

Auto-gratuity: Many restaurants automatically add 18%–20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. Check your bill before adding additional tip — adding 20% on top of an 18% auto-gratuity is generous, not standard.

Should you tip on pre-tax or post-tax?

Most etiquette guides (Emily Post Institute, Miss Manners, Consumer Reports) recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount. The reasoning: sales tax isn't part of the service value, so it shouldn't increase the worker's compensation.

In practice, two factors complicate this:

The receipt usually shows the post-tax total. Many people just compute tip percentage off the total they see, which results in tipping on tax. This is harmless to the worker (slightly more income) but technically over-tipping by a small amount.
Touchscreen tip prompts default to post-tax. When a card reader shows "18%", "20%", "25%" buttons after tax has been added, the suggested amounts are calculated off the post-tax total. To tip on pre-tax, you'd need to enter a custom amount.

The pragmatic position: tip whatever percentage feels right to you, on whichever base is easier to calculate quickly. The 30–80 cents difference at typical restaurant prices is small. Consistency and reliability matter more than precision.

Real-world use cases

1. Splitting an uneven group bill

Three friends order $25, $35, and $60 worth of food. Total: $120. Tax 8% = $9.60. Tip 20% on pre-tax = $24. Grand total: $153.60.

An even split is $51.20 per person — but that's unfair to the $25 diner. A proportional split:

Person A ($25 of food): $25 × 1.28 = $32 (their share of food + tax + tip, proportional)
Person B ($35 of food): $35 × 1.28 = $44.80
Person C ($60 of food): $60 × 1.28 = $76.80

Multiplier 1.28 comes from total ($153.60) ÷ subtotal ($120). Everyone pays proportionally.

2. Group with separated checks

If the table requested separated checks, the server still did extra work coordinating individual orders. Tipping at the standard rate (or slightly higher) on each check is the polite move.

3. Restaurant Week or fixed-price meals

Tip on the regular menu prices, not the discounted Restaurant Week prices. The server provided full service for what would normally be a higher-revenue table.

4. Coupon or discount purchases

Same principle: tip on the pre-discount price. If you used a 50% off coupon on a $100 meal, the server still served a $100 worth of food and labor — tip on $100, not on $50.

5. Buffet or self-service

Standard 10%–15% if servers bring drinks, clear plates, or check on you. No tip is generally required if you bus your own table.

Common mistakes

Confusing "service charge" with tip. Many restaurants now add an automatic "service charge" or "kitchen fee" — these may or may not go to the server. Read the receipt; if "gratuity" or "service" is already included, additional tipping is optional.
Forgetting the touchscreen pre-set is on post-tax total. Choosing 20% on the screen at a restaurant tips 20% of the post-tax total, not the food total. This is fine, just be aware.
Tipping the same percentage on extremely expensive bills. A 20% tip on a $1,000 restaurant bill is $200. Most servers expect this and it's appropriate, but it can feel like a lot. The standard percentage applies regardless of bill size unless service was poor.
Tipping less due to poor restaurant policy. If you're unhappy with the food, the restaurant, or the wait, the server typically isn't responsible. Stiff the tip only for poor server-controlled service. Speak to management about everything else.
Skipping tip on takeout that involved real service. A takeout order at a sit-down restaurant where staff prepared, packaged, and delivered to your car often warrants 5%–10%. Pure counter service is different.
Tipping the buyer at a no-tip-required establishment. Some restaurants (notably in some major cities) have moved to a "no tipping" model with higher menu prices. Tipping at these establishments isn't expected and may even be refused.
Forgetting cash tips at hotels and rideshares. If you only tip via app or card, housekeepers and other workers may not receive any tip. Carry small bills for in-person service.
