What does the % button do?

The % key converts a number to its decimal equivalent. In an expression like 200 + 15%, it calculates 15% of 200 and adds it, giving 230. Useful for adding tax or tip without manually converting percentages.

What is the difference between sin, cos, and tan?

Trigonometric functions for right triangles: sin(θ) = opposite ÷ hypotenuse, cos(θ) = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse, tan(θ) = opposite ÷ adjacent. This calculator uses degrees by default. To convert: radians = degrees × π ÷ 180.

How do I use scientific notation (EE)?

EE (Enter Exponent) inputs a number in scientific notation. For example, 6.02 EE 23 represents 6.02 × 10²³. Essential for very large or small values in physics and chemistry. The calculator displays results in standard form unless the number exceeds display limits.

What is the difference between log and ln?

Order of operations (PEMDAS)

The cornerstone difference between scientific and standard calculators. Scientific calculators evaluate expressions following the rules taught in algebra class:

P Parentheses (innermost first) E Exponents and roots MD Multiplication and Division (left to right) AS Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

So 2 + 3 × 4 on a scientific calculator: the multiplication happens first (3 × 4 = 12), then the addition (2 + 12 = 14). The same expression on a standard calculator would give 20.

Parentheses always win. When you want a specific order that PEMDAS wouldn't naturally produce, wrap that part in parentheses. (2 + 3) × 4 = 20 on any calculator. The parentheses force the addition to happen first.

Exponents and roots

Powers (exponents)

a^b = a raised to the power b

Often entered as x^y, y^x, or with the caret ^ key. 2^10 = 1,024. 10^6 = 1,000,000.

Roots

Square root: √16 = 4. Cube root: ∛27 = 3. nth root: ⁿ√x entered as x^(1/n).

Square root: √x = x^(1/2) Cube root: ∛x = x^(1/3) nth root: ⁿ√x = x^(1/n)

Negative exponents

10^−3 = 1/1000 = 0.001. Useful for unit conversions and scientific notation. Most scientific calculators handle negative exponents directly; just enter the negative sign before the exponent.

Logarithms (log vs. ln)

The most common scientific calculator confusion: log and ln look similar but mean different things.

log (common logarithm, base 10)

log(x) = the power to which 10 must be raised to equal x log(100) = 2 (because 10² = 100) log(1000) = 3 (because 10³ = 1000) log(10) = 1 (because 10¹ = 10)

ln (natural logarithm, base e)

ln(x) = the power to which e (≈ 2.71828) must be raised to equal x ln(e) = 1 ln(1) = 0 ln(2.71828) ≈ 1

Used in: continuous compounding, exponential decay (radioactivity, drug clearance), population growth models, calculus.

Mix-up to avoid: Engineering and finance use both. log without specification typically means base 10. ln always means natural log (base e). When in doubt, check which the formula expects before choosing the button.

Trigonometric functions

The three core functions and their inverses:

sin(θ) = opposite / hypotenuse cos(θ) = adjacent / hypotenuse tan(θ) = opposite / adjacent sin⁻¹(x) = arcsine of x (returns the angle) cos⁻¹(x) = arccosine of x tan⁻¹(x) = arctangent of x

Degree vs. radian mode

The single biggest scientific-calculator error: computing trig in the wrong angular mode. Most scientific calculators support both:

Degree mode (DEG): angle of 90° gives sin(90°) = 1. Used in geometry and most everyday angle problems.
Radian mode (RAD): angle of π/2 radians gives sin(π/2) = 1. Used in calculus, physics, and advanced math.

If you compute sin(30) expecting 0.5 and get −0.988, your calculator is in radians, treating 30 as 30 radians (which is about 4.77 full rotations). Switch to degree mode and recompute.

Check the angular mode every time before doing trig. Most calculators show a small "DEG" or "RAD" indicator near the top of the display. Most homework and engineering uses degrees; most calculus and physics uses radians.

Scientific notation

For very large or very small numbers, scientific calculators use scientific notation:

a × 10^b where: 1 ≤ |a| < 10 b is an integer (positive or negative)

Avogadro's number 6.022 × 10²³ entered as 6.022 EXP 23 or 6.022 × 10^23. The mass of an electron, 9.11 × 10⁻³¹ kg, entered as 9.11 EXP −31.

Most scientific calculators automatically switch to scientific notation when results exceed the display width. A result like "2.3 E 15" means 2.3 × 10¹⁵ = 2,300,000,000,000,000.

Step-by-step example

Computing a compound interest expression

The formula for compound interest is A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt). For P = $5,000, r = 6%, n = 12, t = 10:

Common mistakes

Wrong angular mode. Computing sin(30) in radian mode instead of degree mode produces a meaningless result. Check the mode indicator before any trig calculation.
Confusing log and ln. Plugging ln into a formula that expects log (or vice versa) produces wildly wrong answers. The two differ by a factor of about 2.303 — small enough to look plausible, large enough to be completely wrong.
Missing parentheses on negative numbers. Typing −2² gives −4 (squares first, then negates) on most calculators. To get +4, type (−2)² with explicit parentheses around the negative number.
Forgetting PEMDAS when chaining manually. If you compute 2 + 3, then × 4, you've manually overridden PEMDAS and made the calculator behave like a standard calculator. To get PEMDAS behavior, enter the full expression as one input.
Trusting unmarked exponent notation. Some calculators render 10^6 as 1E+6, others as 1×10⁶, others as 1.000000 + 6. Confirm what your specific calculator's notation means.
Using sin⁻¹ for 1/sin. sin⁻¹(x) is the arcsine — the inverse function. For the reciprocal of sine (cosecant), you'd compute 1/sin(x). The notation is confusingly similar.
Not using parentheses with fractions in exponents. To compute 8^(1/3) — the cube root of 8 — you must type the exponent as (1/3) with parentheses, not 1/3. Without parens, you'd get 8^1 ÷ 3 = 8/3 ≈ 2.67, not the cube root 2.
Mixing up power and root operations. 16^(1/2) is the square root of 16, which is 4. 16^(1/4) is the fourth root, which is 2. Confirm what you mean before pressing equals.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a standard and scientific calculator?

Standard calculators do the four basic operations in left-to-right order. Scientific calculators add exponents, logs, trig functions, and apply PEMDAS rules. For algebra, science, or engineering, you need a scientific calculator. For everyday arithmetic, standard is faster.

How do I switch between degrees and radians?

Look for a DEG/RAD or MODE button. Pressing it usually toggles or opens a mode selection menu. Some calculators show the current mode as a small indicator (DEG or RAD) at the top of the display.

Why is sin(90) negative on my calculator?

How do I enter scientific notation?

What does the e button do?

Can a scientific calculator do algebra?

For symbolic algebra (finding x when 3x + 5 = 14), you need a graphing calculator or computer algebra system (CAS).
